How to Get a Multiple-Entry Visit Visa to Malaysia Online as a Work Pass Holder in Singapore (2023)
TL;DR
The visa you receive will be a 6-month multiple-entry visa or valid until the expiration of your work pass, whichever comes first.
The visa fee is approximately 40 SGD.
In most cases, the processing time for your visa application is less than 5 days.
Here is the latest Malaysia visa guide. This article also includes steps on how to apply for a visa for your parents (non-SG residents) in case they visit you in Singapore and want to take you to Malaysia.
Note: While this article may appear longer due to the inclusion of 30 screenshots, it is less extensive than it seems. The images are provided to guide you through the process visually, making the steps even easier to follow
Malaysia remains a popular travel destination for Singapore residents, thanks to its proximity, affordability, and various attractions. As a Sri Lankan and Employment Pass (EP) holder in Singapore, I recently discovered that multiple-entry visit visas to Malaysia can now be obtained online. This article serves as a step-by-step guide to applying for a Malaysia visa online in 2023, specifically for work pass holders in Singapore. Please remember that this information is based on my personal experience; sometimes, processing times may differ. Before proceeding, always perform extensive research.
Check if You Need a Visa
If you are a citizen of one of the countries listed in the link provided, you must obtain a visa before visiting Malaysia. This guide is specifically for those who require a visit visa and hold a work pass in Singapore.
Gather Your Documents
Before you begin the online application process, gather the following required documents and ensure they meet the specified criteria: When naming the files, use only alphanumeric characters without spaces or special characters. For example, name the file “MyPassport”, “MyPhoto”, “HotelBooking”, “FlightTicket”, “SgWorkPass”, etc.
Passport
Your passport must be valid for over six months from your intended visit to Malaysia.
Scan your passport and save it in .jpeg or .jpg format, ensuring the file size is less than 2MB
If you have a PDF version of your passport, take a clear, full screenshot and save it in the required format.
Ensure all details are legible and the image is high quality.
Name the file only using alphanumeric characters without spaces or special characters. For example, name the file “MyPassport”.
Photo
Your photo should be 35 mm wide by 50 mm high, with no border, and taken within the last six months.
Save the photo in .jpeg or .jpg format, ensuring the file size is less than 2MB.
Make sure the image is clear and of high quality.
Selfie photos are not accepted.
Name the file only using alphanumeric characters without spaces or special characters. For example, name the file “MyPhoto”.
Hotel Booking
Reserve a hotel for your stay in Malaysia using platforms such as Agoda or Booking.com.
Choose a hotel with a free cancellation policy in case your plans change.
Download the hotel booking confirmation as a PDF and name the file only using alphanumeric characters without spaces or special characters. For example, name the file “HotelBooking”.
Suppose you do not intend to stay overnight and just want to visit JB or any other city in Malaysia on a day trip. In that case, I suggest you write a letter mentioning this and attach the letter as a supporting document for your accommodation.
Travel Itinerary
If you have already booked flight tickets, be ready with your travel itinerary in PDF format.
If, like me, you plan to use public transport to visit Malaysia, submit a letter stating your intention.
Attached is the format of the letter I submitted. Make necessary changes (name, address, etc.) before attaching to your visa application.
Name the letter only using alphanumeric characters without spaces or special characters. For example, name the file “LetterForTravelItinerary”.
Your work pass (PEP, EP, or S Pass) should be submitted in PDF format, with both the front and back of the work pass displayed on the same page.
Please take photos of the front and back of your work pass, insert them into a Word document, and save the document as a PDF.
Rename the file using only alphanumeric characters without spaces or special characters, for example, “SgWorkPass”.
Update – 27th June 2024
The Malaysian embassy recently asked to attend an in-person interview at the Malaysian embassy in Singapore to process the visa. Based on the experience of the people who attended the interview, the embassy mainly checks the validity of the work pass. Therefore, when preparing the above work pass document, I suggest attaching a screenshot of the validity of the work pass using the SGWorkPass App.
So, page 1 should contain the front and back photo of your work pass, add the validity screenshot on page 2, and make a single PDF.
If you are unaware, please refer to this link to learn how to check the validity of your workpass using the SGWorkPass App.
With these documents prepared, you are now ready to proceed with your online visa application for Malaysia.
Step 1: Create an Account on the Immigration Department of Malaysia Website
Visit the Immigration Department of Malaysia’s official website (https://malaysiavisa.imi.gov.my/evisa/evisa.jsp) to create an account. This will allow you to access the visa application form and submit your documents for your multiple-entry visit visa to Malaysia.
After registering, you will receive a verification email. Be sure to click the verification link in the email to confirm your account. Login to the account again and gain access to the visa application form.
Step 2: Begin Your Visa Application Process

Read and agree to the Terms & Conditions.
Edit the image passport if needed and make it acceptable and proceed.

Carefully review the information you entered and the documents you uploaded to your visa application. If everything is accurate and complete, proceed to the payment section to submit the required visa fee.
Step 5: Input Card Details and Make the Payment
Enter your card details as prompted and pay the required visa fee. Ensure you provide accurate information and double-check your card details before confirming the payment.
Once you complete the payment, you will receive a confirmation email acknowledging the successful submission of your visa application and payment.
You can view your visa application’s “in progress” status on the application portal.
Step 6: Visa Approval and Printing
You will receive an email notification containing a link when your visa is approved. Click on this link and navigate to the visa application portal. Log in to your account, and you will see options to print both your visa and payment receipt. Ensure you print and keep the visa document, as you may need them for your trip to Malaysia.
It’s important to note that Malaysia has changed its visa policy for work pass holders in Singapore. While they used to issue 1-year multiple-entry visas, they now only grant visas with a validity of 6 months. Be sure to plan your trips to Malaysia accordingly and renew your visa as needed to comply with this updated policy.
I have attached a sample visa below, with my personal information hidden to maintain privacy. This will give you an idea of how the approved visa appears and the essential details it contains. Be sure to review your own visa thoroughly before travelling to Malaysia.
In conclusion, obtaining a multiple-entry visit visa to Malaysia as a work pass holder in Singapore has become more convenient with the online application process. By following this step-by-step guide and preparing the necessary documents, you can easily apply for your visa and plan your trip to explore the beautiful neighbouring country of Malaysia. Hi, I would like to know if it is compulsory to upload accommodation documents when applying for a multi-entry visit visa. I won’t be staying overnight in Malaysia. My plan is to go in the morning and return in the evening.
Suppose you do not intend to stay overnight and just want to visit JB or any other city in Malaysia on a day trip. In that case, I suggest you write a letter mentioning this and attach the letter as a supporting document for your accommodation.
