We all know that being poor negatively impacts education. Not everyone, but most adults who are poor today, did not get a basic education. Also, there is a high chance that their kids are more likely to miss out too. This situation is terrible because education’s major impact on poverty is that education can help end poverty.
Many social issues in the community, including poverty, are caused by a lack of education. Hence, helping people to obtain basic education and providing better resources will eventually solve many social problems people in Sri Lanka face.
Hard Time for Sri Lankans
We all know that 2022 was a difficult year for many Sri Lankans. In 2022, the country went through (is going through) a challenging period. Inflation skyrocketed to 70% – 80%, and the rupee’s depreciation directly impacted the lives of most Sri Lankans. As a result, most people could not afford three meals per day. According to the survey, more than 60% of people have already begun to skip at least one meal.

Why do they need our support?
While overall inflation in Sri Lanka is estimated to be around 70%, some reports claim food inflation is greater than 100%. Meanwhile, due to economic uncertainty, numerous businesses have declared bankruptcy or laid off employees. Also, many people did not receive pay raises in the year 2022. Therefore, people must fulfil their needs at twice the price with the same income. As a result, the people of Sri Lanka require more assistance than ever before.
Why am I doing this book distribution project?
Since 2015, I’ve distributed books to 25-30 needy families. Some of my close friends also contributed to this cause for several years.
As I previously stated, many people struggle to purchase books for their children’s basic education due to the current economic downturn.
To assist people in need of essentials, I decided to expand this book distribution project to 50 PAX (50 students) in 2022. The number of PAX will be determined by how much money I can collect from people worldwide. It could reach 100, 200, or even 1000. It is up to readers like you to determine how much you can contribute to positively impacting their lives.
Project Plan & Timeline
I have created a simple project plan to execute this project smoothly. Here is the updated timeline. As per the latest timeline, we will distribute books on the 4th and 5th of January, 2023.
Categories
I have divided all grades into four categories. Whoever belongs to that category will receive the same book pack. For example, the 10 – 11 category means grade 10 and 11 students will receive the same book pack.
Final Book Requirements
I have already got the quotation from one of the famous booksellers in the Galle area. Here is the quotation for your reference.
Here is the consolidated statutory requirement for 50 PAX/100 PAX.
Per their quotation, we need 165,225.00 Sri Lanka rupees to help 50 students. And the cost will be double to help 100 students.
Convertion rate 1 SGD = 270 LKR
- 50 PAX: LKR 165,225.00 or SGD 608
- 100 PAX: LKR 328,450.00 or SGD 1216
- 150 PAX: LKR 495,675 or SGD 1824
The number of PAX will be decided after the closing of the donation period.
How to select needy students?
I already have a list of 25-30 students, as I have been distributing books for the last six years. Apart from that, I have contact with a retired teacher in a rural school a few miles away from Galle called G/ Keembiya Gamini Maha Vidyalaya. As per that former teacher, almost all students have financial difficulty buying books. I am collaborating with that teacher and thinking of supporting them. How can you contribute?
I closed collecting donations for this project on the 17th of December, 2022.
As I previously stated, this article aims to make more people aware of this project so that we can enhance this project to support more students. How can I trust you?
This uncertainty is understandable if you are working with me for the first time. Unfortunately, we live in a society full of scammers.
So, at the end of this project, I will share a project report that includes all of the book purchase bills, photos of packed books, and screenshots of the donations received.
