“Education is the only tool that may help Sri Lankans overcome poverty and other social challenges.”
As we all know, Sri Lankan people require more support than ever, given the country’s difficult economic situation and skyrocketing inflation. Hence, on the 11th of December 2022, I initiated a charity by publishing an article (linked below) through husnyjeffrey.com to donate exercise books to needy students in Sri Lanka.
After sharing the article with a couple of friends, seventeen activists (including myself) donated to the charity, and I raised 325,750.00 Sri Lanka rupees.
When I completed the calculations, I realized that 350,000 rupees would be enough to help approximately 175 needy students.
First and foremost, I express my gratitude for your generosity and thoughtfulness. 🙏🏽
Categories
We set 4 categories and assigned different book lists for every category as below.
Book Purchasing
We purchase books on the 30th of December from the Ariyadasa Book Shop in Galle. Here is the official receipt of the book purchase. We have also purchased the required stationeries (brown paper, tape, etc.) for packing. The total cost was 349,448.00 rupees.
Book Packing
On January 4th, with the help of some of my friends and family members, we packed majority of the books according to the categories listed above.
Here are some photographs I took while packing books.
Book Distribution Part I
As part 1, we distributed books for everyone in Keebiya Gamini Maha Vidhyalaya Galle from grades 6 to 13. Also, we gave books to the staff members who have schooling children. We have allocated a total of 130 (out of 175) packs for the school. Thanks to the retired teacher Chandra Gamage for helping to coordinate with the principal and the staff.
Here are some photographs we took while distributing books.
Book Distribution Part II
The remaining 45 packs were delivered to needy students near my village in Galle, and others were donated to students recommended by my friends in their villages, and so on.
We prepared 175 packs in all, and all of them were donated.
Financing
The total amount collected (including my contribution) is 325,750.00. However, the total cost to purchase books was 349,448.00. The balance amount and all the transport costs was happily bared by myself.
These are the contributions received from each individual.
Final Gantt Chart
With this article, I have accomplished all the activities I had planned for this project. Please see the attached coloured Gantt Chart.
Final Note
I would like to thank my brother-in-law (Munzir) for supporting me in running the charity smoothly. He is the one who helped to get the quotation, purchase books, and transport them.
I believe that education is the only tool that may help Sri Lankans overcome poverty and other social challenges. If we could help needy students to continue their education without any distractions, it would eventually solve many issues in the long run.
Thank you all for joining me in making a difference in the community.
